Ascension Hospice Volunteer Opportunities!

Ascension Hospice is looking for volunteers to visit with our patients. Volunteers serve in many different capacities. Most of our volunteers simply provide respite (relief) for family members who are the primary caregivers for our patients. This usually involves sitting and providing companionship to the patient while the caregiver gets a much needed break. Volunteers also serve at our Hospice House which is located in the Irmo area (directly across the street from Urgent Care off of St. Andrews Rd). We are currently serving clients throughout the state including Columbia, Sumter, Florence, and Orangeburg. For more information please call or email our Volunteer Coordinator at our Columbia office at 803-796-9296 or jerryr@ascensionhospice.com. Training is quick and simple.
One of the best holidays I ever had! I loved being with the kids. It’s amazing how friendly they are. I spent wonderful moments with the other volunteers as well. We got on well together. A lot of fun. It’s worth doing it!
Annie, former participant

The project will take place in Social home for high-school students in Plovdiv. The Home is situated on the bank of Maritza river, in the second largest Bulgarian town. This is one of the biggest social establishments in the country providing home and care for more than 140 young people at the age of 6 to 16 years. The socially disadvantaged background of most of the children is considered to be the reason for many problems, which they face in school, in their contacts with other people, in their everyday life. The interaction with other young people from different countries, while working, playing, learning together in the frame of an international volunteer project is essential for their socialization and adaptation.

Motivated volunteers from different countries will organize variety of activities for the children and the youngsters in order to optimize their free time during the summer holidays. This will include sports events, gardening, group games, thematic workshops, walks in the city of Plovdiv, visits to different sights and events, etc. Some maintenance and domestic works will be done together with the residents.

Do you want a grandkid to love?

Are all your grandkids living out of town? Here is a solution

An excellent way to spread your grandparent-love around is to become a host-family for a teenage exchange student. These kids are highly screened, have their own money and insurance and speak very good English.

I have been a Host-Grandma for over 4 years and I would never of known how fun it was til I tried it. What is very interesting is that each student has to write a letter explaining why they want to come to the United States for a school year and I would say nearly 80% of them mention a grandparent who is very important to them back home. So they will bond naturally with you as a grandparent-host.

This student is a 15 year old from Brazil. Look at that smile! She loves camping, animals and talking to folks.

All she need is a bed of her own, a dinner plate at your table and lots of love. What has struck me the most about these 15 to 17 year olds is their courage to come to a foreign country, be away from their very close family units and try this new experience. It is amazing to watch the eagerness they show in meeting their new ‘family’ here in the USA.

If you find yourself a little bored and perhaps missing those long-distance grandkids of yours, this may be just the thing for you.

You won't be doing this by yourself....You have 24/7 contact with a local coordinator that knows the ropes of hosting exchange students. Plus we organize group activities with the exchange students in your community so they can all experience America.

You are not ever left on your own for this unique family experience. Your coordinator will be with you every step of the way.

Got an extra bed and dinner plate? Then you qualify for the perfect host family. Contact us for more information and more student choices. Go ahead; email your questions to me. This is a new idea to you perhaps but it is an amazing experience for the whole family.
